HISTORY ON 458 SOCOM AMMO:
The 458 socom ammo for sale was developed after members of the special operations
command lamented the ineffectiveness of the 5.56 NATO cartridge in the M4 carbine and the M16 rifle, specifically after Task Force
Ranger found that multiple shots were needed to incapacitate members of the opposing force in Mogadishu during
Operation Gothic Serpent. In 2000, Marty ter Weeme of Teppo Jutsu and Tony Rumore of Tromix devised the cartridge
, and in February 2001, Tromix was awarded the contract to manufacture the first.458 SOCOM rifle.
The cartridge needed to be compatible with the M4 carbine and fire heavy-for-caliber projectiles at subsonic velocities
with suppressors, two of the many specifications laid out by the project sponsor. Several alternative cartridges
were presented throughout development but ultimately rejected by the project sponsor as not being adequate.
The 7.6239mm, the 939mm Grom, the.45 Professional (now the.450 Bushmaster), and the.50
Action Express were all under consideration. Since the.499 LWR cartridge was still in its early stages of development,
it had not yet been chambered for sale.
As the designer of the.45 Professional cartridge explained to the trade press in an interview, the bolts and extractor in
this cartridge are made from a proprietary steel developed by General Motors to handle the cartridge’s high operating pressures
, this cartridge was ruled out. We eliminated the.50 AE and.499 LWR because in 2000 there were only two.501 bullets available;
both were designed as pistol bullets for the.50
AE and were too light for the subsonic suppressed function. According to studies, the.458 1.5″ Barnes, a short belted
cartridge, was adopted for use in suppressed bolt-action rifles in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. It was demonstrated to
be effective in terms of ballistics, being able to fire a subsonic 500-grain bullet; however, the platform’s bulk and heft made it less
than optimal for its intended use. This solidified the decision, as did the abundance of bullet options in.458 diameter.
The development of the 458 SOCOM ammo in 2000 after the conversation between Marty Ter Weeme of Teppo Jutsu LLC
and a member of United States Special Operations Command.
They thought about developing a highly destructive cartridge after the ineffectiveness of the 5.56 NATO round in the Battle of Mogadishu in 1993.
Since then, many companies have been manufacturing 458 SOCOM ammo for sale.
458 SOCOM ammo can be used for other purposes also besides self-defense.
Many hunters prefer using .458 SOCOM ammo for the small game elk, whitetail, hogs, coyotes, and general pests.
Aside from the small games, 458 SOCOM ammo can also help hunters to harvest deer
. 458 SOCOM is the most powerful cartridge and the most suitable option for shooters who want more muzzle energy, fps, and stopping power.
The multipurpose utility has made .458 SOCOM ammo for sale handy!
The ammo is a unique cartridge and has its own advantages. It allows users to turn a standard AR-15 into a powerful weapon.
Talking about the specifications of .458 SOCOM ammo, it is 2.26” and the case design is slightly shoulder.
These bullet weights range between 300 to 500 yards and may vary according to the manufacturers.
If you are looking for .458 SOCOM ammo for sale, count on Ammofount, an online store that deals in premium quality.

A Brief History Of This 458 socom:
The history of the .458 SOCOM ammo is quite interesting, my friend. It all began in the early 2000s when Marty ter Weeme and Tony Rumore, founders of Teppo Jutsu LLC, embarked on a mission to develop a cartridge that would offer increased power and versatility for the AR-15 platform.
Their goal was to create a round that would be suitable for hunting large game and provide adequate stopping power in self-defense situations. They also wanted the cartridge to be compatible with standard AR-15 magazines and require only a barrel change to accommodate the new cartridge.
With these aims in mind, ter Weeme and Rumore set out to design and develop a new cartridge that would meet their requirements. After extensive research and testing, they settled on a cartridge based on the .50 Action Express case, necked down to accept .458 caliber bullets.
The development process involved tweaking various aspects of the cartridge, such as case length, bullet weight, and bullet design, to optimize its performance. They needed to ensure the cartridge would function reliably in the AR-15 platform while delivering the desired ballistic performance.
Once they had refined the design, te Weeme and Rumore submitted their creation to the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute (SAAMI) for standardization. In 2004, SAAMI officially recognized the .458 SOCOM cartridge and established standards for its dimensions and pressure.
Since then, the popularity of the .458 SOCOM has grown steadily, particularly among AR-15 enthusiasts who desire a cartridge with enhanced power and versatility. Today, numerous firearms manufacturers offer AR-15 rifles, uppers, barrels, and other components specifically chambered for the .458 SOCOM.
Thanks to the dedication and ingenuity of Marty ter Weeme and Tony Rumore, the .458 SOCOM has become a respected and sought-after cartridge among hunters, self-defense practitioners, and firearms enthusiasts.
The 458 SOCOM ammo was designed for a very specific purpose.
As the acronym implies (Special Operations Command), members of special operations units were unhappy with the
5.56 rounds ability to bring down the enemy quickly and with as few shots as possible in combat while using platforms such as the M4 and M16.
After deliberations and experimentation, the .458 SOCOM came to be in the early 2000’s.
This 40mm long case was designed to be fitted with the much larger .458 diameter bullets that produce dramatically
more force than the 5.56 rounds but still able to be used with an AR magazine and a specialized .458 SOCOM upper receiver.
The cartridge has found some popularity in the civilian shooting world as well and is very popular among AR enthusiasts and hand loaders.
yrs The .458 SOCOM has been touted as an excellent low-velocity home defense round as well as a great brush gun.
There are several companies producing factory loaded .458 SOCOM cartridges, but the availability is limited.
The majority of these rounds come in bullet weights ranging between 300-500gr with subsonic rounds available.
Is 458 Socom Ammo Good For Hunting
The 458 SOCOM ammo is indeed excellent for hunting. Its powerful and hard-hitting nature makes it a formidable choice for taking down big game.
The 458 SOCOM cartridge fires a hefty .458 caliber bullet, which delivers a significant amount of energy upon impact. This makes it highly effective for hunting large animals such as hogs, deer, and even larger game like bears.
When you’re out in the field, you want a cartridge that can reliably bring down your target with confidence. The 458 SOCOM’s stopping power and terminal ballistics make it well-suited for this purpose. It can penetrate deep into the target and deliver a devastating blow, ensuring a clean and ethical kill.
Additionally, the 458 SOCOM’s compatibility with the AR-15 platform provides hunters with the advantage of using a familiar and versatile firearm. Many hunters appreciate the ability to use their AR-15 rifles chambered in 458 SOCOM for hunting, as it offers a balance of power, accuracy, and maneuverability.
However, do keep in mind that the 458 SOCOM is a larger and more powerful cartridge compared to standard AR-15 rounds. This means it may have more recoil and require some adjustment in shooting technique. It’s essential to practice and become familiar with the recoil and handling characteristics of the cartridge before heading out for a hunt.
So, if you’re looking for a cartridge that can handle the demands of hunting big game and deliver the stopping power you need, the 458 SOCOM is a fantastic choice. Just remember to always follow local hunting regulations and ethical hunting practices.
Happy hunting, my friend!
Is a 458 SOCOM or 450 Bushmaster more powerful?
How powerful is a 458 SOCOM ammo?
Overview of 458 SOCOM Ammo
The 458 SOCOM ammo was developed largely due to the lack of powder charge in the 5.56 NATO round.
After talks between special forces troops after Operation Gothic Serpent in Mogadishu,
they determined they needed a cartridge with more power because the Somalis they were fighting would chew
Khat all day, which curbs appetite and increases pain tolerance making it seem like the 5.56 NATO round was more ineffective than it truly was.
In 2000 Marty ter Weeme completed the cartridge design and Tromix was contracted to build the first
.458 SOCOM rifle and it was released in February 2001.
Why is it called 458 SOCOM?
458 SOCOM naming convention is quite simple. 458 refers to the bullet diameter of .458 inches. SOCOM
comes from the special operations command who initially had the idea and desire to make the round.
Purpose
The general purpose of developing the 458 SOCOM was to create a round that was completely compatible
with the M4 Carbine but have more stopping power than the 5.56 NATO.
The 458 SOCOM in its final form is a lengthened .50 AE case. Even the original prototypes bore the
.50 AE headstamp which caused confusion initially because the case is longer and has a narrower rim.
This cartridge is a great brush gun as well as a low-velocity home defense cartridge.
Most of the bullet weights range from 300 to 500 grain with several major manufacturers making
factory ammo this is definitely a good contender for many situations.
Performance
The performance of this round really shines within 200 yards.
At 100 yards this round is traveling at 1512.2 ft per second with 1776.2 feet lbs on target, you’ve got to
love those feet lbs on target if you’re an American.
Guns that Shoot 458 SOCOM Ammo
The 458 round was created to run in an M4 Carbine so nearly any M4 can run it but the upper will have
to be specific for the 458 SOCOM.
The magazines and lowers are completely interchangeable with this cartridge.
You can see the full offering of 458 SOCOM on Guns.com.
CMMG Resolute in 458 SOCOM
The CMMG Resolute is one of the many AR-15 style rifles you can get chambered in 458 SOCOM.
The Resolute rifle is your standard AR-15 platform rifle but built for 458 SOCOM.
Palmetto State Armory often has them in stock.
Wilson Combat AR-15 Recon Rifle
If you are a big believer in brands then you’ll likely love Wilson Combat’s 458 offering in this caliber.
This gun is available in several different lengths and comes with some extra bells and whistles so the nearly
$2,400 price point isn’t as hard to stomach.
You can typically find the Wilson Combat Recon Rifle on Brownells.
458 SOCOM Ammo Price and Availability
Availability is almost a cuss word now in the gun world as ammo manufacturers work tirelessly to catch up to
consumer demand as people stockpile ammo and continue to want to train, hunt, and practice shooting.
As of this writing, you can typically find these rounds for $3.65 /round and they typically come in 20 round boxes.
That’s a bit higher than other alternative AR-15 platform calibers such as 300 blackout.
You can typically find the 458 SOCOM on Brownells or at Palmetto State Armory. I would also look at Lucky
Gunner as they have a solid selection of ammo.
Some of the major manufacturers making 458 SOCOM ammo are Buffalo Bore, Federal, and SBR Ammo.
Reloading 458 SOCOM
Many people who have adopted the 458 SOCOM round have also taken to reloading the round.
There are two major companies making dies for the 458 SOCOM the Hornady 2 Die Set and the Lee Full Length set.
Most people will save and reload their own brass casings but you can also buy brass all over the internet.
From used to brand new brass cases.

HISTORY OF 458 socom AMMO CARTRIDGES
Bill Alexander and Janne Pohjoispaa jointly created the 458 Hunting Ammo.
This load was unveiled and tested in 2003 at the Blackwater
Training Facility in North Carolina, where it remained supersonic at 1,200 yards (1,100 m) range and out-shot the 7.62mm NATO with only half the recoil.
The main aim behind the invention of this cartridge was to create an effective STANAG magazine-length load for the AR-15 platform that
could shoot at a range beyond 800 yards that is above 730m and with performance above the 223 Remington/5.56mm NATO round.
This cartridge faced difficulties being accepted in the community of hunters for several reasons,
one being that Alexander trademarked the name of the load.
To solve the problem mentioned earlier, Alexander Bill in 2011 relinquished the trademark when the load gained SAAMI approval,
enabling other companies to produce barrels, grendel ammo with the acronym 6.5 Grendel Ammo bulk 500 Rounds.
Given the tight restriction of STANAG magazine size, the Grendel designer opted for a shorter,
wider case to fit more powder while leaving space for its long, high ballistic coefficient 65mm rounds.
The weight of this load ranges from 90 gr to 130 gr with muzzle velocity ranging between
2300 ft/s for the 129 gr and 130 gr and 2900 ft/s muzzle velocity for the 77 and 90 gr round.
The 6.5 Grendel round can weigh anywhere from 227 to 275 grains depending on the case material and bullet weight.
WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?
The 458 socom ammunition load is a cartridge used by individuals, law enforcement, and hunters for long
to medium-range targeting with great precision. This load is excellent for tactical shooting, big game, and varmint hunting.

.458 SOCOM AMMO HISTORY
The 458 SOCOM (aka: 11.5x40mm RB) is a large caliber cartridge designed for use on the AR15/M4 platform.
It was developed by Marty ter Weeme, founder of Teppo Jutsu LLC in 2000.
The impetus was an informal (“beer and barbeque”) discussion with a senior member of the US special operations
community regarding the apparent lack of effectiveness of the 5.56 x 45 rifle cartridge in a recent conflict.
In particular, the reports from members of Task Force Ranger in Mogadishu, S
omalia as part of Operation Gothic Serpent that multiple shots were required to neutralize members of
the opposing force led to the request to develop a new cartridge that would deliver far more energy from short barrels at relatively short distances.
The project sponsor set forth a number of specific requirements namely that the cartridge had to fit in the M4
carbine and be capable of firing heavy-for-caliber projectiles at subsonic velocity using suppressors
. During the development phase, various other cartridges were considered and proposed to the project sponsor,
but rejected as not meeting all the requirements. The cartridges considered were 7.62×39mm, 9×39mm Grom,
.45 Professional (which has since become the .450 Bushmaster), and .50 Action Express. At the time, the
.499 LWR cartridge was still in the development phase and had not been chambered commercially.

The 458 round was created to run in an M4 Carbine so nearly any M4 can run it but the upper will have to be specific for the 458 SOCOM.
The magazines and lowers are completely interchangeable with this cartridge.
The 300-grain (19 g) round offers a muzzle velocity of 1,900 ft/s. Currently more than a dozen rifle makers
offer production firearms in this caliber. below are tje features of 458 socom ammunition
- Progressive nose geometry for deep, straight penetration
- CNC machined from solid copper to overcome barriers to penetration
- Radial flutes that force the hydraulic energy inward to build pressure
- A permanent wound cavity that is 2 to 4 times greater than flat or ball nose bullets
- 250gr bullets – 1900 FPS
- 300gr bullets – 1700 FPS
- 325gr bullets – 165 FPS

HISTORY ON 458 SOCOM AMMO:
The 458 socom ammo for sale was developed after members of the special operations command
lamented the ineffectiveness of the 5.56 NATO cartridge in the M4 carbine and the M16 rifle, specifically
after Task Force Ranger found that multiple shots were needed to incapacitate members of the opposing
force in Mogadishu during Operation Gothic Serpent. In 2000, Marty ter Weeme of Teppo Jutsu and Tony
Rumore of Tromix devised the cartridge, and in February 2001, Tromix was awarded the contract to manufacture the first.458 SOCOM rifle.
The cartridge needed to be compatible with the M4 carbine and fire heavy-for-caliber projectiles at subsonic
velocities with suppressors, two of the many specifications laid out by the project sponsor. Several alternative
cartridges were presented throughout development but ultimately rejected by the project sponsor as not being adequate.
The 7.6239mm, the 939mm Grom, the.45 Professional (now the.450 Bushmaster), and the.50 Action Express were all under consideration.
Since the.499 LWR cartridge was still in its early stages of development, it had not yet been chambered for sale.
As the designer of the.45 Professional cartridge explained to the trade press in an interview, the bolts and extractor in this cartridge
are made from a proprietary steel developed by General Motors to handle the cartridge’s high operating pressures,
this cartridge was ruled out. We eliminated the.50 AE and.499 LWR because in 2000 there were only two.501 bullets available;
both were designed as pistol bullets for the.50
AE and were too light for the subsonic suppressed function. According to studies, the.458 1.5″ Barnes, a short belted cartridge,
was adopted for use in suppressed bolt-action rifles in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. It was demonstrated to be
effective in terms of ballistics, being able to fire a subsonic 500-grain bullet; however, the platform’s bulk and heft made
it less than optimal for its intended use. This solidified the decision, as did the abundance of bullet options in.458 diameter.

Hornady XTP bullets were designed for hunting, self-defense, and law enforcement.
One of the great things about the XTP bullet is reliable performance,
it features controlled expansion where six serrations divide the bullet into six symmetrical sections.
These sections weaken the jacket to allow controlled expansion at low velocities and ensures
fragmentation does not occur at high velocities. The XTP bullet is really known for its stopping power.
They were designed from the beginning to expand reliably at a variety of handgun velocities and deliver
deep, terminal penetration with every shot. Most handgun bullets are designed to perform at a single factory-specified velocity where
the XTP bullet is designed to offer controlled expansion over a range of velocities.
Each XTP Bullet has a swaged core and drawn
copper jacket to ensure uniform expansion and in-flight stability.
Adding a cannelure to this bullet keeps the core and the jacket locked together while also allowing the cartridge
case to tightly crimp, adding security at high velocities. All of Underwood Ammo rounds utilize flash
suppressed powder so that your vision will not be compromised if it becomes necessary to use your firearm in low light.
